John Grant – May 2011

Everyone has a favorite band or singer they believe is subject to criminal neglect. That John Grant’s effortlessly rich, expansive baritone, couched in typically heartbreaking, lush melody, hasn’t found a wider audience indeed drives his fans to consider it a crime.
That was until now. Grant’s first solo album Queen Of Denmark, released via Shock Entertainment/Bella Union in Australia, is so undeniably great that the world is starting to listen.
With his good friends and supporters Midlake providing the backing, Queen Of Denmark is a record of gravitas and grace, of FM melody magic laced with raw emotional bleeding. It’s so good in fact that esteemed British magazine MOJO awarded it the best album of 2010.
It asks why relationships are roulette and love is hell in a last-ditch attempt at self-improvement and atonement after a decade of alcohol and cocaine dependency. It’s not overstating the case to say – as John has said himself, that he’s contemplated suicide. And yet there is redemption in its exquisite grooves.

Hawkwind – March 2011

Kitty, Daisy & Lewis – January 2011

After a triumphant debut Australian tour in 2009 which saw sell out shows, electrifying performances and a legion of new fans turned on to the old world cool of Kitty, Daisy & Lewis, the trio returned for an even bigger tour in 2011.

Since 2005 Kitty, Daisy & Lewis have been thrilling audiences around the globe both live and on their self-titled debut album with their modernist take on r&b, jump blues, country & western, swing and old time rock ‘n’ roll. Charlatans – November 2010

After thrilling audiences in Sydney and Melbourne in 2008, The Charlatans announced they would be back in Australia this November with a brand new album and full national tour. For more than two decades now, The Charlatans have been an inspirational force in British rock. As they celebrate their twentieth anniversary with some very special gigs, they remain as exciting and relevant now, as when they first broke through to the immortal strains of ‘The Only One I Know’ – if not, more so, as a new generation of young bands and fans today hail them as lifelong heroes.
Their eleventh studio collection, ‘Who We Touch’, which will be released through Shock Entertainment on September 17th, 2010 must surely rank as their boldest to date, radically broadening, in places, their aesthetic remit. It is, says Burgess, “a soulful voyage”, a journey through moods upful and profound, dark and delirious, ultimately concluding in blissful optimism. It’s sound is inspired by many heroes, yet always sounds like no-one other than The Charlatans themselves.

C.W. Stoneking – July 2010

Across two full-length albums including King Hokum in 2006 and 2008’s ARIA winning Jungle Blues, C.W. Stoneking has rightfully earned the reputation as the leading voice on the Australian roots music scene. Revisiting and re-invigorating the pre-war blues, jazz, calypso and jungle sounds of the 20’s and 30’s, C.W. Stoneking has captured the imagination of a nation with his plaintive nostalgic voice and vivid narrations. Accompanying himself with National Reso-Phonic guitar and tenor banjo, and with his amazing brass band the ‘Primitive Horn Orchestra’ Stoneking’s songs range in style from lonesome field holler blues, to hokum blues duets, to full blown jungle epics.

Kitty, Daisy & Lewis – Dec 2009

Multi-instrumentalists Kitty Daisy & Lewis play guitar, piano, banjo, lap steel guitar, harmonica, drums, double bass, ukulele, xylophone, trombone and accordion between them. Their debut album was recorded utterly digital-free analogue by Lewis and his father Graeme in their home studio in Kentish Town. A stickler for living and breathing the music they play and talk so passionately about, Lewis DJs, collects and even cuts his own 78rpm records himself when he isn’t recording with his sisters. This obsessive passion for the vintage music that inspires their performances led to their compilation ‘A – Z of Kitty, Daisy & Lewis – The Roots Of Rock n Roll’ being named one of The Guardian’s 2007 ‘Albums Of The Year’.

Hotclub Of Cowtown – April 2009

The Hot Club of Cowtown formed in 1998 as a hot jazz/western swing trio. The group consisted of Elana Fremerman (now known as Elana James) (vocals, violin), Whit Smith (vocals, guitar), and a series of bass players. The lineup was solidified when bassist Jake Erwin joined the trio in 2000. The Hot Club’s first album, 1998′s Swingin’ Stampede is a collection of standards, fiddle tunes, and classic Western Swing songs, including two written by Bob Wills, a major influence on the band. Their 1999 follow-up album, Tall Tales, showcases the songwriting of Smith and James with many original songs, including “Darling You And I Are Through” by James, and “Emily” and “When I Lost You” by Smith, as well as more Western Swing standards by Bob Wills, Pee Wee King, and others. Further albums would continue the same formula of classic Western Swing and hot jazz and originals in the same style. Further examples of these are the band’s two most recent studio albums, Ghost Train (2002) and Wishful Thinking (2009).

Rodney Crowell – April 2009

Although best known as a singer-songwriter of alternative country music, the Houston born musician was once married to Johnny Cash’s daughter Rosanne, and for fourteen years had a great influence on her career, producing most of her albums during that time. That’s not to say he was overshadowed by her. On the contrary, during the ‘80’s and ‘90’s he enjoyed huge mainstream popularity – his 1988 album Diamonds & Dirt produced an unprecedented five No 1 hits, and a year later he won a Grammy for Best Country Song After all This Time. He broke with mainstream country with his semi-autobiographical album The Houston Kid in 2001, and in 2003 he was inducted into the Nashville Songwriter Hall of Fame. And now Rodney Crowell has written a new set of songs. His latest album Sex & Gasoline is all about women – lovers, daughters, wives, friends, Madonnas and whores, often told from an imagined female point of view. With one ex-wife, one current, and four daughters, that makes for a certain curiosity.

Elana James – March 2008

Formerly the driving force behind the hot jazz/Western swing trio Hot Club of Cowtown, violinist and singer Elana James is an internationally acclaimed performer whose music crosses the boundaries of country, jazz, folk and world music. Elana has performed at countless major concerts and music festivals worldwide. She toured with both Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson as a member of Hot Club of Cowtown in 2004, and joined Bob Dylan’s band in 2005, the first female instrumentalist to do so in thirty years. After two tours with Bob, she went off to form her own band, only to be invited back to tour as the opening act for Dylan’s summer US tour less than a year later. 2007 saw Elana appear on the landmark Lost Highway Records release by Willie Nelson, Ray Price and Merle Haggard “The Last of the Breed” – playing twin fiddles throughout with the legendary Johnny Gimble – and finally release her acclaimed self-titled solo debut.
